George Bernard Shaw was an influential Irish playwright, critic, and political activist who wrote more than 60 plays in his lifetime. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century, whose works revolutionised comedic drama. One of his most famous plays, Pygmalion, was first performed in 1913 and tells the story of a phonetics professor who transforms a Cockney flower girl into a refined lady. It was later adapted into a movie, for which Shaw won an Academy Award for the screenplay in 1939. It was also the basis for the musical My Fair Lady, which premiered on Broadway in 1956 and became one of the longest-running shows in history. Shaw received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of drama.
