The Statue of Peace, commonly referred to as the Comfort Woman Statue, represents the victims of sexual slavery, or "comfort women," by the Japanese military during World War II, from the onset of the Second Sino-Japanese War until the end of the Pacific War. The bronze statue was erected in Seoul on December 14, 2011 to compel the Japanese government to apologise and honour the victims. Designed by Kim Seo-kyung and Kim Eun-sung, the statue features a girl in a chima jeogori (a modified form of hanbok from the late 19th to early 20th century), with small hands and short hair, sitting and staring at the Japanese Embassy in central Seoul. Despite Japan's repeated demands for its removal, both Seoul and the victims have refused.
