Meteora, also known as the "suspended in the air" monasteries, is a unique complex of monasteries located on top of giant rocks in Greece. These rocks, or megaliths, were formed over 60 million years ago from sandstone. The average height is about 300 meters, although some reach 550 meters. The megaliths were formed as a result of erosion and seismic activity, which led to the creation of these unique geological structures. The Meteora monasteries were built on top of these rocks in the Middle Ages and they are one of the most impressive examples of monastic architecture. Complex systems of ropes and nets were used to reach the monasteries, and in some cases, even suspension bridges. Today, these monasteries are an important pilgrimage site.
