Vitus Bering (1681-1741) was a Danish navigator and explorer. He became known for his voyages along the coast of the Arctic Ocean. In 1728, Bering was ordered by the Russian Academy of Sciences to go on an expedition to Siberia and Eastern Siberia to conduct geographical and hydrographic surveys. During his travels, Bering discovered several islands, including Bering Island, Chukchi and Commander Islands, which are named in his honour. In 1741, Bering led his last expedition in an attempt to find a route from Asia to America through the strait named after him, the Bering Strait. However, his ship was shipwrecked on Bering Island and most of the crew died of starvation and cold.
