The first Valentine’s day card is believed to be a letter written by Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr who lived in the 3rd century AD. He was imprisoned by the Roman emperor Claudius II for performing secret marriages for young lovers. Before his execution, he sent a note to the jailer’s daughter, whom he fell in love with, and signed it: “From your Valentine”. However, it wasn’t until the early 20th century that Valentine’s Day cards became popular in the United States. The first commercially printed Valentine’s day card was produced in 1913 by Hallmark, known as Hall Brothers at that time. By 1915, the company made most of its profit from printing and selling Valentine’s day cards and Christmas cards.
