The earliest surviving romantic Valentine missive was written by Charles, Duke of Orleans in 1415. He was a French nobleman who was captured at the Battle of Agincourt during the Hundred Years’ War and imprisoned in the Tower of London for 24 years! While in prison, he wrote many poems and letters to his wife, Bonne of Armagnac. One of these letters, dated February 14, 1415, is considered the first Valentine’s Day card because this love poem repeats phrases using "Valentine" to express tender feelings. In the original language it it reads: “Je suis desja d'amour tanné Ma tres doulce Valentinée…” In English, this beautiful verse translates to as: “I am already sick of love, My very gentle Valentine…” This letter is a part of the British Library collection now.
