On the 15th day of the first lunar month, China celebrates one of the most beautiful festivals - the Lantern Festival. It marks the end of the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) period and the first full moon of the new lunar year. The festival has its roots in ancient Chinese culture and is believed to have originated more than 2,000 years ago. According to one theory, the festival originated as a Buddhist celebration during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220). Emperor Hanmingdi heard that some monks lit lanterns in their temples to show respect to Buddha on the 15th day of the first lunar month. That night, he gave the order to lit lanterns in all temples, homes, and royal palaces. This Buddhist custom gradually became a grand and colorful festival of lanterns in China.
