Dwarf crocodiles are the smallest crocodiles. They average about 1.5 metres in length and have tough scales even for crocodiles. One of its two subspecies, O. t. tetraspis, is found in West Africa, the other, O. t. osborni, is native to the Congo Basin and is smaller in size. There is also a third genetically distinct population in Gabon, which is the most interesting of all. These crocodiles live only in caves where they feed on insects such as crickets and bat guano. They are larger than their surface-dwelling counterparts and - because of the alkaline guano that breaks down their scales - are orange in colour.
